Firmware is the invisible part of your networking device, enabling all the features and allowing you seamless access to the internet. Now, router manufacturers often release updates to the firmware, which are important to install if you are looking to keep your router in the best shape. These updates might contain the latest feature enhancements, safety and security upgrades, and additional updates that improve the performance of your Asus router.
Now, if you are looking to update the existing firmware version of your Asus router, it becomes important to learn the ways you can do so.
This blog will walk you through the steps to update the asus router firmware version to its latest and begin surfing the internet with added ease.
Ways You Can Update The Firmware
There are two ways you can update the router firmware. These are:
- Using the web-based settings management wizard
- The manual method (by downloading the firmware file and then updating it)
While enabling the auto-update feature is an option in most routers and range extender devices today, you can always use the above-mentioned methods to check and manually update the firmware versions.
Asus Router Firmware Update Using The Web-based Settings Management Wizard
The web-based settings management wizard for your Asus router can be used to check for the latest firmware updates and install them as well. Here are some steps you can follow:
- Connect your smartphone/computer system to the Asus router network.
- Launch a web browser and in the address bar, type in the default web address i.e. https://routerasus.com and press Enter. You will be redirected to the Asus router login page.
- Type in the default username and password in the respective fields and then click on the Login button. You will now reach the Asus router setup wizard.
- From the Device Administration tab, navigate to the Firmware Version section. If there’s an update available, you’ll see an icon with “Update Available” mentioned at the top. You can also click on the “Check for Updates” button and the update information will be displayed.
- If there’s an update available, click on the Update Firmware button you see on the screen. The firmware update process will now begin and the status for the same will be visible on the screen.
Note: Your asus router may restart several times during the firmware update process. Make sure you do not attempt to turn off or disconnect the router from the power outlet as it may affect the hardware or even cause abnormalities in the software functions.
Once the firmware update process is complete, the router will restart itself and you’ll notice the power and status LEDs light up normally.
The Manual Method (By Downloading The Firmware File and Then Updating It)
The manual firmware update process will require you to download the firmware update file from the official support page of the Asus website. This downloaded file can then be used to update the existing version. Here are some steps you can follow:

- In the Downloads sub-section, click on the Firmware button. When the Firmware field appears, type in the respective Asus router model name and then click on the ‘Search’ button.
